Mérida - Aljucén

This stage of the Ruta Vía de la Plata unites the monumental city of Mérida with the small town of Aljucén along 18 kilometres and an elevation gain of 262 metres. It is an ideal route for gravel bikes, combining compacted dirt roads, tracks trails and short stretches of tarmacked roads, providing variety without major technical difficulties, although there are some short but demanding climbs.

The tour leaves Mérida through green and grassland areas, offering views of the natural surroundings around the Roman reservoir of Proserpina, one of the most iconic places on the outskirts of the city. From there, the route starts a gentle ascent to Aljucén among tranquil landscapes and low levels of vehicle traffic, allowing for a relaxed ride but with some physical effort.

Aljucén, the end point of this stage, is a small town village that retains its rural essence and is part of Cornalvo Natural Park. It is an ideal place to relax, enjoy the local cuisine and prepare for the next stage. Take a water bottle with you as there are not too many refreshment points along the way.

Aljucén - Mérida

This 18-kilometre stage of the Ruta Vía de la Plata connects the quiet town of Aljucén to the historic city of Mérida along well-preserved rural roads and dirt tracks, ideal for gravel bikes. The elevation gain of 225 metres is gradual, providing a moderate and accessible challenge for riders with basic experience of long rides.

The journey takes you through typical grassland landscapes of Extremadura, with expansive views and stretches where the loneliness of the countryside combines with shaded areas, especially as you approach the Roman reservoir of Proserpina, one of the most attractive points on the route. This enclave is not only a place with history, it is also ideal for a short stop before continuing on to the city.

The arrival at Mérida is along low-traffic roads, enabling access to the centre without major difficulties. This stage, although not technical, requires some care at crossroads and in the final urban stretch. Once in Mérida, you enjoy one of the richest Roman heritages in Europe, with monuments such as the Roman Theatre or the Temple of Diana.
